De laatste zet van Google in de strijd met Microsoft om "world domination" is een interessante: de superieure Javascript-engine en HTML5-implementatie van Googles browser Chrome als plugin (Chrome Frame) voor Internet Explorer. Zo dreigt IE van binnenuit irrelevant gemaakt te worden.

In Firefox gebruik ik al jaren de IE Tab add-on om sommige websites (waaronder onze webmail) in IE weer te geven, zonder dat ik een daarvoor een aparte browser hoef op te starten. (Daarbinnen zou dan weer Chrome Frame kunnen draaien, maar laten we niet overdrijven).

Zulke technieken vinden steeds meer opgang. Op een lager niveau zie je hetzelfde met virtualisatietechnieken en cloud computing, en dichter bij de business met "engine-based" architecturen (business rules, BPM e.d.). One man's application is another man's platform. De klassieke lagenplaatjes van architecten gaan zo steeds meer op spekkoek lijken...
